Design Thinking

"The redesigned onboarding flow shipped on time. The research brief said users wanted fewer steps. The team removed three steps. Completion rates dropped 22%. Post-launch interviews revealed the real problem: users were not confused by the steps, they were confused by the terminology on step two. The team had measured the symptom and solved for it. Design Thinking is the process that prevents this."

What is Design Thinking ?

Design Thinking is a structured problem-solving process that keeps the focus on the real, underlying user problem rather than the first obvious symptom. It is made up of five phases: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Why does it matter?

Solving the symptom

Without the Define phase, teams build solutions to the first obvious problem and not the underlying cause. The right answer to the wrong question costs exactly as much as the wrong answer.

Skipping empathy

PMs who skip Empathize build what users say they want. PMs who complete it build what users actually need. The gap between those two things is where most product failures live.

Testing too late

A prototype test costs hours. A sprint costs two weeks. A release costs six months. Every week you wait to test an assumption, the cost of being wrong multiplies.

After this module you will be able to frame any product problem precisely, choose the right type of prototype for the assumption you are testing, and make the pivot/persevere/stop call with evidence and not instinct.
