Vanity vs Actionable Metrics

Vanity: Avoid these

WHAT IT IS

Total registered users does not show whether anyone is getting value. A user who signed up and never returned still counts.

WHY IT IS A TRAP

Total page views can be inflated by confused users visiting the wrong page repeatedly. High views can indicate bad UX, not engagement.

WHY IT IS VANITY

Social media likes do not correlate with product usage, revenue, or retention. They measure interest, not intent, value, or behaviour.

Actionable: Track these

WHAT IT IS

Weekly Active Users completing the core action, drops when value delivery drops and rises when you improve it.

WHY IT IS ACTIONABLE

Task completion rate measures whether users achieved their goal. It has a direct cause-and-effect relationship with UX quality.

WHY IT IS ACTIONABLE

Conversion rate directly measures funnel effectiveness. A 1% drop at checkout has an immediately calculable revenue impact.
